tutpup

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I use tutpup?

If you're having a problem playing tutpup, the first thing to do is to check your browser for compatibility with the site.

This checks:

  • Your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc)
  • Is JavaScript turned on?
  • Is Flash installed?
  • Can you hear the sound files?

If you need to download Flash, or turn on JavaScript, only do this if you own the computer. If you are using one at school, then get permission from a teacher, or the IT person, before you do anything!

Why can't I hear any sounds?

To play the spelling game you need to be able to hear our MP3 files.

To check, click on the following play button Sound on the browser compatibility page.

If you hear the sound fantastic, your computer can receive and play audio files! If you don't hear anything, click No, and you will then see some other things to check:

  • Are your computer's speakers connected and turned on?
  • Does your headset actually work?
  • Can you play the sound file directly?

The first two are simple, but if you still can't hear anything, then your school, ISP or possibly even your anti-virus program, might be blocking access to the MP3 files.

We can't test or fix this for you, and the best idea is to ask your parents to fix it, or if you are in a school, the person who runs your school's network. (In the UK most schools get their internet access via ISPs who are Regional Broadband Consortia).

How do I join?

There are two ways to register:

  1. As an individual - anyone can do this, but if you are under 13 you will need to get your account activated by a parent or guardian (we send them an email). If they don't approve your account within a week then you won't be able to log in. To get unblocked you need your parent or guardian to find the email and clicking on the link to approve it. No click, no account - it's that simple.
  2. From school - your teacher sets up a class account, when you register you use the class code they give you to activate your account.

Screen Name

Choose a screen name carefully because you can't change it (it would muck up other player's Win Walls). All names are a combination of a colour, animal and number e.g. YellowCow99.

I've forgotten my password, how do I reset it?

Try to remember your password so you can easily access your tutpup account.

  • If you registered with a class code you must ask your teacher to reset your password.
  • If you entered an email address when you registered you can reset your password by entering this email address and you'll receive instructions by email on how to create a new password.

How do I play?

There are two ways to play a game in tutpup:

  1. Create your own game - you choose the type of game and the wait for someone else to challenge you (fastest way to start playing tutpup).
  2. Joining a game - you find a game created by someone else and challenge them.

How do I create my own game?

  1. From the home page choose a game to play (e.g. Maths 101, Spelling, Times Tables).
  2. Select the type of game (e.g. Add, Subtract, Multiply).
  3. Choose the level (from 'Easy Peasy' up to 'Area 51').
  4. Wait for a challenger to join your game.

This should take 10 - 15 seconds depending on how many players are online. When a challenger arrives, you can see their screen name and average score for this game. You can then decide if you want to play them, or not.

You have 15 seconds to accept or reject the challenging.

Starting the game

If you accept you will be taken to the Start Game screen. Click Start and you will then see Waiting for Players - if the other players is slow you can cancel the game, but if they click on start you will both then get a three second countdown before the game starts.

Each game is 60 seconds to try to win. If you get stuck at the Waiting for Players screen for more than 10 or 15 seconds, we recommend you try to create another game.

Creating your own game is the fastest way to start playing Tutpup.

How do I join a game?

Joining a game created by someone else is very simple:

  1. From the home page choose a game to play (e.g. Maths 101, Spelling, Times Tables).
  2. See if there are any games available to join (on the right hand side of the screen under the 'Join a game' heading).

The number of games you see will depend on how many people are creating challenge games and how many people you are competing with to join games. If there are lots of people trying to join games, or if there are not many people creating challenges then you may find it hard to join a game. This is why it's often faster to create a challenge game, rather than to join one.

  1. Click on one of the available games to challenge the other player.
  2. They will see your challenge and can choose to accept or ignore it - don't worry if it takes a few goes before you get into a game, keep trying.

Starting the game

If your challenge is accepted you will be taken to the Start Game screen. Click Start and you will then see Waiting for Players - if the other players is slow you can cancel the game, but if they click on start you will both then get a three second countdown before the game starts.

No luck joining other player's games? Try creating your own game.

What happens during the game?

Once the game starts you have 60 seconds to play.

During the game you can find out if you're winning in one of three ways:

  1. From the score on screen.
  2. What sort of funny face can you see?

Sad_face you are losing, Neutral_face you are equal, Smiley_face you are winning

  1. From where your avatar is on screen, who is in front?

At the end of the game you will summary screen showing:

  • Who won
  • Questions you got right and wrong

Getting faster

One of the biggest limitations for most players is their keyboard skills.

  • If you can touch type then you will have a big advantage in the spelling game.
  • If you have a number pad (most laptops don't) then that really helps with the maths games.
  • Playing the easy levels is where you can get the highest score, but if you want to get smarter you need to try to harder levels. To be the World Champion 100m runner, you will never get there if you only ever race snails!

The bottom line - the more you play, the smarter you get and the more games you will win.

Am I doing well?

There are lots of ways to decide if you think you are doing well.

  • You can look at the Hall of Fame, which is for the whole world, your country or just your class (based on number of wins).
  • How many medals and scalps do you have on your Win Wall? Scalps are who you have beaten and the medals are awarded for different things like speed (Speed Demon), the number of games (Centurion for 100 games), if you have won lots of games you created (Great Defender) or if you have won lots where you were the challenger (Great Attacker).

Getting to the top of the Hall of Fame will be hard work, no matter which league you want to focus on. Getting to the top in the international league is a huge achievement, no matter if its for an hour, day, week, month or year!

Really all that matters is doing what our motto says - PLAY, COMPETE, LEARN.

Average scores

To try and help you choose who you want to play against we show the player's average score when you are trying to get into a game. Some players won't have an average score if they are a new player or haven't played the game/level before.

How do I register as a teacher?

You can sign up as a teacher to create an account that allows you to create classes and manage students.

  • Once you have completed your registration you will need to come up with a class code for each of your classes (if you have more than one).
  • To get kids registered tell them to use the class code when they are registering.
  • Using a class code means there is no parental activation required. If you delete the student or class (for example at the end of the year) then they will only be able to keep playing unless they get a new class code or a parental/guardian activation.
  • Everything you need to do can be done within the dashboard which you will see when you log in.
  • Reports - we are working on these in response to your feedback, so watch this space and send us your ideas and we will try to make them part of tutpup.

As a teacher, how do I delete students from the class?

You can remove students from your class by visiting the 'Students' tab in the teacher's section for the class you want to manage.

Click the 'change' link for the relevant student and a pop-up will appear that allows you to either move a student between classes or remove them completely.

Will you add more games?

Yes! We will develop more games but coming up with ideas that kids might like to play, where they can learn and which work in a one-on-one competitive environment, is very difficult!

Please send us any suggestions you have (one school sent us over 100 ideas in two days). We can't promise to do everything, but we will try!

Why can't I chat with other players?

We get endless requests from players who want to chat to their friends.

Right now tutpup does not have chat and there are no plans to add it. We are looking at having canned chat, where you can say things like well done, or play me again soon, but we will probably never allow real chat, for two reasons:

  • Safety - it's very hard to monitor chat, to stop people swearing and most importantly to try and stop adults pretending they are kids, so they can chat with kids.
  • Most all schools block chat - so they would block tutpup and then you couldn't play.

Why do my points go down on the Hall of Fame?

The Hall of Fame has a number of tabs for 24 hours, 7 30 and 365 days respectively. These work on a 'sliding scale' so that the 24hr league, for example, shows only the points you've accumulated over the last 24 hours. This is the same for all of the leagues, we suggest you concentrate on the 365 day league which will show your total score (for the next years worth of tutpup playing at least) if you don't like to see your score fall.

You need to keep playing & winning games on tutpup to stay in the Hall of Fame.

Other problems you might have

Here are a few other issues that you might experience:

  • Avatars not moving during game play - something is probably broken at our end.
  • Errors in the games - there may be a few bugs and if you find one, let us know ASAP (you may be smarter than our geeks, so have your CV ready as well).
  • Crash - don't panic! These happen and at the very worst you may lose the information about the game you were playing. We try to keep Tutpup running 24 x 7, but when something breaks we may have to close the site while we fix it.

If all else fails you can contact us and we will try to get back to you ASAP.
